What is ISO 27001?
ISO/IEC 27001:2022 sets out how an organisation should manage information security risk. It has two parts: the management system requirements in Clauses 4 to 10 (context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement), and Annex A, a set of 93 controls across organisational, people, physical and technological themes. You choose which controls apply based on your risks and document that choice in a Statement of Applicability.
- OrganisationalControls 5.1–5.37 37
- PeopleControls 6.1–6.8 8
- PhysicalControls 7.1–7.14 14
- TechnologicalControls 8.1–8.34 34
You select the controls your risks call for and record each decision in a Statement of Applicability.
Certification is issued by an accredited certification body after a two-stage external audit. That is separate from the internal audit we run: you engage the certification body directly, and we recommend and introduce ones we have worked with in your region. In Australia, look for a body accredited by JAS-ANZ or an equivalent member of the International Accreditation Forum. See internal vs external audit.
- Before Build and internal audit Implementation, then a full internal audit and management review
- Year 0 Stage 1 audit Certification body reviews your documented system and readiness
- Year 0 Stage 2 audit Certification body tests that the system operates; certificate issued
- Year 1 Surveillance audit A sample of the system re-checked, after your annual internal audit
- Year 2 Surveillance audit Another sample re-checked, after your annual internal audit
- Year 3 Recertification A full audit renews the certificate for another three years
Why businesses come to us
Most of our ISO 27001 clients have a specific trigger: a tender, an enterprise customer or a partner who won’t sign without it. They need the certificate, not a two-year transformation program. We start with that trigger, define the smallest credible scope that satisfies it and build only what that scope needs.
How the engagement runs
- Week 1: Gap assessment. We profile your organisation, review what evidence already exists and pinpoint the controls that matter most for your target.
- Week 2: Policies. Right-sized policies written for how your business actually runs, then approved by leadership.
- Weeks 3–7: Evidence sprint. We map controls, close gaps and capture evidence with your team: around two hours a week of your time.
- Week 8: Internal audit. An independent audit, run the same way the certification body will, finds anything left before they do.
- Then: Certified. We stand beside you through Stage 1 and Stage 2 with your chosen certification body.

When you'd use this
- A government tender or enterprise contract lists ISO 27001 as a requirement or scored criterion
- Customer security questionnaires are slowing your sales cycle
- You’re entering a regulated market (finance, health, government supply chain)
- Investors or acquirers are asking how information security is governed
